Collectively among local businesses, the money continues to flow.
Aspen’s monthly consumption report released Wednesday said retail sales in December hit $90.56 million, a 5.6 percent increase over $85.76 million in the same month in 2013.
It’s likely a record. Looking back over the past 11 years of modern bookkeeping, no December has ever approached the $90 million mark, according to the city’s Finance Department.
December is Aspen’s strongest sales month, reflecting about 15 percent of the year’s business activity, the report said.
The accommodations category, reflecting hotel and lodge activity, reaped $28.4 million, a 16 percent increase over $24.5 million logged in December 2013.
Restaurants and bars garnered $12.6 million, a 9 percent uptick compared with $11.5 million recorded in the same month a year earlier.
The sports equipment and clothing sector reported $9.7 million in sales, a 14 percent jump when evaluated against the $8.5 million reported in December 2013.
Gains also were noted in the following categories: clothing, 10 percent; food and drug, 5 percent; liquor and marijuana, 29 percent; general retail, 8 percent; utilities, 6 percent; and luxury goods, 1 percent.
Declines were posted in construction, 24 percent; automobile, 12 percent; and miscellaneous, 34 percent.
