The Location: Basalt, Colorado | The Heart of the Roaring Fork Valley |
Known as the “Heart of the Roaring Fork Valley,” Basalt is just a short drive from the Aspen-Snowmass area. Having taken its name from the basaltic rock formation of Black Mountain (now known as Basalt Mountain), Basalt was known as Aspen Junction until 1895.
This quaint, mountain town offers an array of recreational opportunities, including two “Gold Medal” trout streams, the Fryingpan River and the Roaring Fork River. The Ruedi Reservoir is a popular destination for boating, and mountain biking is prevalent in the Roaring Fork Valley. Golf enthusiasts will love the private Roaring Fork Club, which is home to an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature course that provides phenomenal mountain views. Art aficionados will certainly enjoy the area, as there are numerous galleries within a short walk of historic downtown, including spaces devoted to contemporary art, three-dimensional art, fine art photography, and even original theater productions. Shopping and dining experiences are also relished in Basalt, as chic items may be found in boutiques, warehouses, galleries and shops throughout the area. Restaurant options include everything from local coffee shops, bakeries, and picnic lunches to fine dining at upscale locations. Farmer’s markets thrive year-round, with a Sunday summer market in downtown Basalt and an indoor winter market in Willits. Sitting at an altitude of 6,610 feet, Basalt benefits from a rather temperate climate all year long (even when it snows). The Neighbors: Aspen-Snowmass |
Many Basalt residents spend quite a bit of time in the Aspen-Snowmass area. Located less than 45 minutes from both Aspen and Snowmass Village, Basalt is within only a short drive of these illustrious ski and resort markets.
Because of the beautiful weather (more than 300 days of sunshine per year), striking natural surroundings and the plethora of year-round outdoor activities, both Aspen and Snowmass Village have become havens for active, wealthy individuals from all over the world. To be sure, the collective Aspen/Snowmass marketplace continues to produce some of the world’s most expensive and illustrious real estate transactions (For proof, look no further than the December, 2012 Forbes article highlighting the properties and residents on Aspen’s Red Mountain, also known as Billionaire’s Mountain). The vast ski resort complex that is generally referred to as “Aspen/Snowmass” was developed and originally operated by the Aspen Skiing Company. Aspen/Snowmass is comprised of 4 distinct areas: Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass. Snowmass is by far the largest of these (at 3,128 acres), being greater in size than the other three areas combined. When all mountains are open, it boasts the most vertical feet of any ski area in the United States. The Aspen-Snowmass (and Basalt) areas also thrive in the spring and summer months. As the snow melts and the leaves populate the trees, residents transition from skiing and snowboarding to golf, fly fishing, mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding and endless other activities under the Colorado sunshine.
